Introducing Rob Maxfield
Rob has worked as a stonemason since leaving school in 1988 and is now based in Lichfield. He sources his materials from local quarries, working primarily with Red and White Hollington Stone, Portland Limestone and Forest of Dean stone.
His craftsmanship can be found throughout the Midlands and the South West, with commissions reaching as far as the Scottish borders. Notable examples of Rob’s work include the stonework above Shakespeare’s tomb in Stratford, contributions to the iconic three spires of Lichfield Cathedral, St Martins Church in Birmingham, and several pieces within the grounds of Tyntesfield.
After completing his formal apprenticeship with Linford Bridgeman in Lichfield, Rob broadened his artistic foundation by studying for an HND in Figurative Design and Sculpture at Stafford Art College.
On returning to practical stonemasonry, he quickly earned a reputation for exceptional workmanship and went on to establish a successful workshop in Bridgnorth, Shropshire. His portfolio spans gargoyles, grotesques, garden walling, ornaments, tracery windows and bespoke fireplaces.
With decades of experience in what many consider a declining traditional craft, Rob is now committed to passing on his knowledge. He offers hands‑on courses designed to teach both foundational and advanced stonemasonry skills, helping to preserve the trade for future generations.
Rob is also a brand ambassador for the global clothing company Dickies, representing their workwear here in the UK.
